NHH Executive and UIE Spain:

Oslo, 9. juni 2022.

NHH Executive has developed an intensive program in collaboration with the Spanish Intercontinental University of Business (UIE), focusing on the seafood industry as part of their study tour to Norway.

This partnership connects two institutions and creates valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange between the seafood industries of northern and southern Europe. Steffen Juranek, the Program Director at NHH Executive, emphasized that this collaboration is a key step toward internationalizing both institutions.

«We aim to establish visiting programs that allow international groups to come here for a week. This approach helps us to internationalize,» Juranek explains.

«Last year, we hosted a group from Australia, and in September, we'll welcome a group from Germany. We are working to develop this initiative further by inviting other schools to bring their programs here for a unique experience.»

Uniqe experience

The Spanish university recognized NHH Executive as a key partner when exploring global educational offerings in the seafood sector.

«Upon examining the universities involved in the seafood sector, we found that only the Norwegian School of Economics could tailor a custom-made program for us,» says Javier Fraga Díaz, Manager at ABANCA and responsible for blue economy initiatives at the bank that owns UIE.

No other university provides such a program, even in Europe.

Customized and intensive program

The visit from UIE showcases how NHH Executive tailors programs to meet the specific knowledge needs of its partners.

The program for the Spanish delegation was created in close collaboration with UIE, addressing their interest in the Norwegian seafood industry and sustainable management practices.

As a rule, we develop our offerings in partnership with our collaborators.

Kristin Aarefjord Stave, head of tailored programs at NHH Executive.

«For the UIE delegation, we have crafted an intensive program that provides them with insights into the Norwegian seafood industry, particularly in the areas of salmon farming and sustainable business models,» says Stave.

Case studies

A key focus throughout the program is equipping participants with the knowledge and skills they can immediately apply within their own organizations upon returning to Spain, thereby contributing to increased value creation in their domestic seafood sector.

The Spanish delegation's week-long visit to NHH Executive includes lectures, case studies, and industry interactions. A highlight was a session with Alf-Helge Aarskog, former CEO of Mowi, discussing a Harvard Business School case study about his leadership.

«I didn't tell them beforehand», Juranek shares.

– Students prepared the case, and when they came back to class, I told them, now we have Alf-Helge with us to discuss the case. I think that was a very nice feature for them.

A diverse student body enhances learning

The visiting group from Spain includes CFOs, lawyers, production plant personnel, engineers, financial sector representatives, and business owners.

Dana Zambrano, an Ecuadorian lawyer specialising in maritime and fisheries law, values the diverse backgrounds of her classmates.

«It is a good mix and selection that the university made because we learn from each other's careers, areas, experience, and backgrounds,» she says. «There are financial people, biologists, veterinarians, processor owners, ship owners, naval engineers – it's a mix that has a lot of richness.»

Zambrano, who works at a consultancy firm in Ecuador serving the seafood and aquaculture sectors, appreciates the program's comprehensive approach.

«It has been a really great experience.» she says. «We have the economic side that the business school is giving us and an aquaculture side that we have not seen that much in Ecuador.»

Building future industry leaders

Jose Soutullo Fernandez, a third-generation mussel farmer from O Grove, north of Vigo, sees the visit as essential for expanding his knowledge beyond his family business.

«I knew what I was doing within the mussel industry, but I didn't know about fish, fisheries, commercial marketing – everything that involved the industry besides mussels,» explains Fernandez, whose family company employs 43 people.

«There is so much to take, so much to learn. Especially now that I'm here in Norway, seeing the way you guys sell not just the salmon of amazing quality, but also the brand, the image and what it entails.»

Fernandez, who is preparing to take over his family's business eventually, values learning from both professors and classmates: «I get to learn a lot from professors because they are experts and leaders within the industry. But I also get to learn a lot from my colleagues in the class because that's their daily life as well.»

Future collaboration

Begoña Jamardo Suárez, Head of International Relations at UIE, emphasises the university's close connection to industry needs. UIE was founded on a foundation dating back to 1880, having completed various stages of educational development in Galicia, and has led executive education in its area of influence since its creation.

We are very connected to the community . During all these years, we have trained around 60,000 managers in a region of about three million inhabitants.

Begoña Jamardo Suárez, Head of International Relations at UIE

UIE, like its Norwegian counterpart, combines theoretical training with practical applications, featuring active professionals as lecturers who share their expertise and real-life examples. Both institutions see this collaboration as just the beginning.

«I hope that in the future this relation could be even closer, taking advantage of both knowledge, north and south, different species in aquaculture and fishing.»
