A vital knowledge program for the seafood industry

Oslo, 9. juni 2022.

NHH Executive offers tailored educational programs for executives and professionals in a wide range of industries and sectors. The flagship program is the Executive MBA, which offers three specializations: Financial Management and Leadership, Strategic Management, and Seafood Management.

The seafood cluster NCE Seafood Innovation has been an important driving force behind the Executive MBA program with a specialization in Seafood Management.

«Our members expressed a clear need for further education tailored to the specific needs and opportunities of the seafood industry. In close collaboration with NHH, we have developed a forward-looking program that combines academic strength, industry insight, and exchange of experience,» says Trude Jansen Hagland, CEO of NCE Seafood Innovation.

The specialization in Seafood Management is a two-year part-time study program taken alongside a full-time job.

Knowledge cluster

The seafood cluster, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, is in its final year of Innovation Norway's cluster program. However, Hagland promises they will continue to be a driving force for new knowledge and innovation in the industry on behalf of their members.

«We have the SEAFOOD Trainee program for recent graduates who want to enter and work in the industry. Here, we have simplified the process for companies by allowing them to log into our portal and find the right candidates.»

SEAFOOD Next is a one-year knowledge and introduction program for more experienced candidates. The cluster also offers a dedicated program for digitalization and digital transformation.

Pursuing further education

Hagland took over as head of the seafood cluster in 2023 and has extensive industry experience, including from Cargill and Aquabyte. She has also worked at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

As the leader of NCE Seafood Innovation, an important task is to equip the cluster's members for the future. Hagland herself is currently enrolled in the two-year Executive MBA program with a specialization in Seafood Management at NHH Executive

«As a leader of an industry cluster, it is crucial to understand the strategic, economic, and regulatory framework conditions under which the industry operates. Through the Executive MBA program, I gain access to updated research, strategic tools, and a valuable network of leaders across the value chain. This is insight and competence that I can bring back and translate into concrete actions for the benefit of our members.»

Competence as a competitive advantage

The specialization in Seafood Management is a two-year part-time study program taken alongside a full-time job.

«It requires planning and good preparations before the gatherings. But if you have a role in the seafood industry, this specialization is professionally and personally spot-on. Here, you gain new and applicable knowledge and a new network from many different parts of the seafood industry,» she says.

NHH Professor Steffen Juranek, academic director for the Seafood Management specialization, praises NCE Seafood Innovation for their forward-looking approach to competence.

The fact that an industry cluster like NCE Seafood Innovation is at the forefront of such a competence boost sends a strong signal that the industry prioritizes the development of tomorrow's leaders.

Interdisciplinary approach to complex challenges

According to Hagland, the seafood industry depends on interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing to succeed with necessary restructuring. The different disciplines must work more closely to find innovative solutions to the industry's challenges.

«We can no longer operate in professional silos. We need meeting places where economists, biologists, technologists, lawyers, and social scientists can share insights, challenge each other, and think in new ways together. It is in this interdisciplinary field of tension that tomorrow's solutions lie,» she says.

Strong belief in the future

Despite challenges related to sustainability, regulatory framework conditions, and global competition, Jansen Hagland strongly believes in the future of the seafood industry.

«The seafood industry has an impressive ability to turn challenges into opportunities. Time and time again, we have seen how targeted investments in innovation, competence, and collaboration have led the industry into new growth phases. With the right competence, bold leaders, and competitive framework conditions, we have all the prerequisites to succeed,» she concludes.
